Makeup Bag Makeovers

ImageMake up bag make overs! It’s a new season time to do it!
WHAT TO TOSS:
* Anything with heaps of glitter: Subtle shimmer is flattering, but gobs of glittery makeup over wrinkles is the same as screaming, “Look at me! Look at me!” Not the effect you’re looking for.
* Anything too chalky and dry: A soft, touchable texture is the key to making up a younger-looking face. So long dusty, chalky powder and, dry, matte lipstick!
* Anything in little-girl pastels: Still attached to baby-blue and cotton-candy-pink palettes? Donate them to your daughter. Those colors might look young but that doesn’t mean that they’ll make you look younger.
WHAT TO ADD:
1. A lightweight foundation with good-for-your-skin ingredients. Try: Avon ANEW Beauty Age-Transforming Foundation SPF 15, $16.

2. A taupe blush for chiseling the edges of your cheekbones, jawline, and neck. Try: MAC Powder Blush in Emote, $17.50.

3. An eye-shadow palette with a variety of light shades to highlight your lids and brow bone, along with darker shades for contouring your crease. Try: Bobbi Brown Stonewashed Nudes Palette, $50, or Sonia Kashuk Eye Palette in Perfectly Neutral, $12.99.

4. A brow pencil and brush duo that’s a breeze to apply. Try: Prescriptives Groom Stick for Brows, $18.50.

5. A powder blush in a vivid shade that stays put. Try: DiorBlush in A Touch of Blush, $34, or Flirt! Peek-A-Blush in Crazy in Love, $12.

6. An ultra-glossy mascara that fattens skimpy lashes. Try: Lancome Cils Design Pro Dual End Mascara, $35, or Prestige Lash Matrix Mascara, $5.95.

7. A primer that helps your makeup stay put. Try: Benefit “That Gal” Brightening Face Primer, $27, which also adds a flicker of luminescence, or Revlon Age Defying Instant Firming Face Primer, $13.99.

8. A concealer that brightens and covers. Try: Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Double Face Perfector, $8.99, with a highlighter on one end and a high-pigment concealer on the other.

9. Your most important tool: a foundation brush. Try: Lancome Foundation Brush #2, $32, with a tapered edge for precise blending.

10. A cream liner in an intense, eye-brightening jewel tone. Try: L’Oreal Paris HIP High Intensity Pigments Color Truth Cream Eyeliner in Teal, $12.

11. A cream blush that matches your skin’s natural flush. Try: Almay Smart Shade Blush in Pink, $8.99.

12. A multitasking face powder that sets makeup and delivers a hint of glow. Try: Lorac Perfectly Lit Oil-Free Luminizing Powder in Spotlight, $32, or CoverGirl Advanced Radiance Age-Defying Pressed Powder, $6.99.

13. A lip liner in a gloss-like texture that defines without overpowering. Try: MAC Lipglass Pencil in Neutralzone, $13.50.

14. A bright yet sheer lipstick that takes the fear factor out of fall’s intense shades. Try: Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pure Shine Sheer Lipstick in Italian Cherry, $28, or Wet ‘n’ Wild Wild Shine Lipstick in Jaded Shine, $1.99.

Fall Into Fall Series- Part 1 Exfoliation Why Do We Need it?

Fall brings weather changes, fun times and Holidays but it also brings skin care and makeup ”tweeks” we need that fit alongside our wardrobe changes. We will have a great time exploring many of these topics in this Falling into Fall series.

First up let’s talk exfoliation it is the number one thing we need to do for a season change (and at least 1 time a week) so that all of those wonderful moisturizing products we use for Fall and Winter work their best.

Exfoliation means you remove that old dead skin layer kind of like a snake does (only not quite so dramatic, yikes!) and tend to those calluses on the outermost layer of your skin.  By doing so it allows your skin to breathe and bring new skin cell turnover faster. It can be a controversial topic but most Dermatologists agree that to slough off old cells once in a while is a good thing to do. There are Mechanical (Apricot Scrubs or Beaded Scrubs, Towelettes, Microdermabrasion, brushes like Clairsonic  http://www.clairsonic.com devices,  ultrasound) methods, Chemical (Chemical Peels, Retinol, Alpha Hydroxy fruit acids, Salicylic Acids ), and even shaving can do this (I don’t recommend that for your face if you are female). Here is a Wiki link if you would like a bit more info on the science behind exfoliation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exfoliation_%28cosmetology%29 Regular exfoliation is an important part of a skin care regimen. Cells move from the base of the epidermis up to the top in a 30-day cycle. If the old cells remain on the surface and build up, they can contribute to a flat, dull appearance, blemishes, and scaling. Exfoliation also helps improve the penetration of your other skin products. Sites,Web M.D.

How often we exfoliate really depends on your skin type and how strong you skin may be. People differ and some have thicker layers of skin than others. A rule of thumb is that once a week is usually safe for most people and some can exfoliate as often as 2-3 times a week.

We must consider your use of other creams or lotions that already contain exfoliants such as Retinol or Alpha Hydroxy fruit acids as we mentioned above. If you are already using these types of formulas you may not need to manually exfoliate as often. If you skin becomes very red and inflamed back off your treatments right away because these can be signs of over exfoliation. You can always consult your Dermatologist is you are unsure of using a new product or procedure or need to be certain of the type of skin you have. Always read the ingredients list on the new products you use to make sure you are not doing double duty so you don’t run the risk of over exfoliation. I like to call it my “Rule of Five” you know that the ingredients will be listed in order at least up to the first 5 you read so it give you an idea as to what type of formula you are working with.

Don’t forget about your body, it needs exfoliation too right down to your toes. Body creams will absorb better, if you use a self- tanning product the application will be less likely to streak, look more natural and last longer. There are tons of great body scrubs on the market and exfoliating brushes, sponges and gloves available. I like to make a natural sugar, honey scrub. I mix larger coarse raw sugar (for manual exfoliation) with honey ( a natural humectant  that draws moisture from the air to hydrate and retain water to the skin) then follow with a good moisturizing cream (cream is a bit more protective than lotions just because they tend to be thicker and wear longer)  All great things to remember as we fall into Fall.

I like a few different products Clinique Turnaround Instant Facial ($37.50  http://www.clinique.com ) , Dermalogica gentle cream exfoliant ($37.00 http://www.dermalogica.com/us/html/products/gentle-cream-exfoliant-9.html?type=function&cat=exfoliants ) , St Ives Apricot Scrubs ($3-5.00 drugstores, a deal in my opinion and the scrubbing pieces are gentle enough for most skin).

I know that my skin feels brighter; more alive and fine lines seem to diminish in appearance after proper exfoliation.

Nerium AD to have or have not?

Image

Nerium AD is a really hot topic and product right now, but let’s look at a few things before we buy. It comes with a powerhouse of claims and a great looking packaging too boot!

Our testers did use it for a few weeks and we will discuss our findings however you know me and I have My Rule of 5! (5 after 5 if it’s a night cream). The first 5 ingredients of anything you buy will tell you what you are getting. Remember (5 n’5) you can control what you own. They loved Nerium for the silky feel and the long term hydration. Many are really sold on this recipe and it is very botanical. I found it to be a bit thick and sticky but I was told to mix it with water which helped a lot.

Let’s look at a bottle that has a high price.

  1. NAE-8 Propierity Blend  (A nice way to say we don’t disclose how much of this “ healing” herb you get.) in this case Oleander Leaf, etc..
  2. Aloe Barbadenis Leaf (extract) = Aloe Vera- like what grows in your yard, don’t be fooled by cosmetic  terms!
  3. Propietary protein (Collogen, Elastin, Glycosaminoglycans) added protein powders under a safe umbrella.
  4. Glycerin, a humectant used in many cosmetics. Did you know that honey is a natural humectant?
  5. Oryza Sative Hydrolyzed Bran – Ground rice and filler is what this is period.

This said I think there are a lot of happy people using this product and feeling a change. I think so often we have skin that is not well enough hydrated and this is one of the perfect answers  to help. I and our testers did feel the regime helped us to be more aware of skin hydration and how important it can be. If you can afford it it’s worth it! Kat on the fence on this! If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! But you might be after this.http://natural1.nerium.com/Test_MediaPlayer.aspx?VideoID=204

Retro Lips! Gotta Have It?

Image

Love the “Retro” Pastel colors on your lips but want a modern touch to them? The key is it’s in the texture of the formula you choose. Try going for a Satin finish instead of a Matte that can really look outdated. Then try a dab of matching or even clear gloss on top just at the middle of you lower lip. That gives extra shine and adds that “Lush” to your pucker power!

Fair skins might try cool pinks and purples with a blue undertone (think lavender). Darker completions can rock warmer more vibrant hues (think fuchsias or coral reds).

Image

If you are shy about color it’s ok to go for sheer formulas. You can first balm them down by using it on top of your color to give a hint (in fact if you use a balm with SPF that is even better and more protection) . Try Revlon Color Burst lip Butter-in cupcake $7.00 in drugstores, or Dior Lipstick Pink Caprise $32.00 www.dior.com) , Now that’s Rock’n it!
